Not a Mom Blog

This isn’t a mom blog. But it is. Yet it isn’t. Believe it or not, I really am this indecisive!

But let me start by talking about boxes. Not physical boxes. The figurative boxes we put people into. This is really just a mental shortcut, an easy and effortless way to organize the world around us. But it oversimplifies things and misses the details that make all the difference.

Growing up, I was always put into boxes, boxes that were far from accurate. But I went along because I was afraid of revealing my true colors. Of letting people get close. Until college. I remember when I was selecting which one to attend. I was constantly drawn to the material of the one I ultimately chose. There was a student talking about thinking outside the box. Their response? “What box?” I wanted to go there. Then I took it a step further and designed my own major. Yeah, I was done with boxes.

And it was amazing because I took classes in psychology, child development, music, social work, anthropology, political science, English, philosophy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and history. For my major.

My point is, I don’t want to be in a box and neither does this blog. Sure, the majority of my posts involve being a mom, but that’s not all I write about.

I’m a mom, but I’m also a reader and writer who enjoys baking and thinking about the world. I can’t and won’t separate these parts of myself. Being a mom touches all aspects of my life. Being a reader touches all aspects of my life. Writing has me daydreaming whenever I have a second. I bake with my kids, find recipes in the books I read, and think about the food I write into my stories.

I temporarily lost myself when I first met my husband. I’ll be darned if I let motherhood do that to me again (I don’t curse. It’s just not my thing).

This is a mom blog. It’s a book blog. It’s a writing blog. It’s a food blog. It’s a blog where I can ramble. And, yet, it’s not. It’s me, standing next to a crushed box.

But maybe I should keep the literal boxes for my kids to play in.

  1. I love it! I feel right now I’m all over the map with my blog. I just write whatever I think is helpful, or I have on my mind or my experiences. So I truly get where you’re coming from. I’m a scatter brain and my blog is too. Your blog should reflect you and it does! And you’re wonderful at everything that makes you you!

    1. So true! If we can’t be ourselves on our blog, then why bother? I love variety and it means there’s always something to write about. There’s nothing worse than starting and then realizing nothing you want to write about matches what you’re supposed to be writing about.

  2. Love your honesty! I’m so glad to see others having trouble focusing their blogs. It feels like the proverbial wall where I just throw stuff up and see what sticks! SO nice to meet you.

    1. Nice to meet you, too, and thanks for reading! The nice part about a blog is that it’s there for whatever purpose we need it for. And if we can’t be ourselves on our own platform, then where can we be us? At least, that’s how I like to think about it.

      1. That’s a great perspective! It’s hard to remember that the blogs are ALL a work in progress. Just like in life, you start where you are and move on. Perfectionism is such an evil that I have to battle against.

  3. I love this! It also goes along with how when we become mothers, we classify ourselves as wife + mom… that’s it… knowing we are way more than that and were more than that before our children came along.

    1. Thanks! I like to try to remember who I was before motherhood because the kids won’t be with me forever. It’s like a couple who become parents and forget how to be a couple.

  5. I love this. I feel the same most days. I’m a mom, I have a blog. But I don’t just think about parenting related things. Glad to know I’m not alone in wanting to write about a variety of topics. I think it keeps things interesting!

    1. Thanks! It’s always nice to enjoy widely. Life is too short to be narrow minded or to focus on just one thing. It’s supposed to be interesting!

    1. Yes! It’s absolutely terrible! Even though we are moms, why can’t we just be people, too? I don’t know how to be a physician-chef-housekeeper…

    1. You have a lovely blog! As I seem to be perpetually busy, I love that you’re breaking down your experience into small chunks rather than detail everything in a single post as so many moms do. It makes it easy to follow along, read and digest, and there’s a clear topic. I love it!

Both of my kids are late preterm babies, born at 34 and 36 weeks, so nowhere near as early as your little darling, but still scary and full of worry. I look forward to reading more of your story!

    1. Please do feel free! Apparently it fits as a lifestyle blog? But niches are annoying and I do so love your nicheless blog! Destroy those metaphorical boxes!

      1. Niches are boring! Why he in a niche when you can break down walls? Or get kids to do it. They’re geniuses when it comes to destruction!

  6. I can relate! My blog was aimed more towards teen mom since i am one. Im 22 with 2 kids. I had my daughter at 18 and my son at 21. I write about my husband and kids but i also use it to write my thoughts and opinions. My blog is an open book right now. My intentions are to build a community around it where others can express themselves, share their stories and make themselves at home.

    1. That sounds like a lovely idea! Moms are so much more than just moms and do more than raise kids. Confining ourselves to the mom niche sometimes feels stifling, so why bother? Thank you for your comment and I wish you success!

  7. Oh I feel ya! I’m two years into parenthood and I’m struggling with the ‘boxes’. I think of my blog in the same way, I’m not sure I’m a mum blogger or moaner or nutter 🤗 who knows, but as long as we enjoy it 😊 really enjoyed reading your post x

    1. Thanks! Perhaps boxes exist to be smashed. Besides, who says we must be in one? I suppose it makes it easier for readers to find you and to retain readers, but I’d rather write what speaks to my heart and the universe will send the right readers my way. Best of luck to you, and have fun with motherhood! I’m about 4 years in and it’s tough, but my kids make me laugh all the time, so it’s worth it.

    1. Thank you! I firmly believe a blog is a platform we the writers can take full control of, which means we get to choose what it is and isn’t. Best of luck to you!
