The Mother I Want to Be

I want to be kind and understanding.

I want to be firm, but fun.

The mom my kids can come running to for anything and everything.

I want to always have words of love and encouragement.

I want to be there for things little and big.

Taking time out of my busy day for my kids should be the highlight of my day.

I want to know my kids, know their interests and who their friends are.

I want to be trusted by my kids, so they can share their highs and lows without fear of judgment, so they can vent to a listening ear.

Advice should not be what comes out of my mouth first.

I want to be the kind of mom my kids want to engage with.

I want to be the kind of mom who let’s her kids be who they are, no matter who that is.

Finding out who my kids are should be a joyful discovery.

I want to be the mom my kids can lean on at any age, the mom they can come to for words of wisdom.

I want to be the mom who will wipe away their tears, kiss their ouchies, and still be able to leave them be when they need it.

Just being there for my kids is my job, my joy, my privilege.

I want to be the kind of mom my mom was and is. I want to give my kids freedom, but always provide a safety net. I want them to feel safe with me. I want them to feel loved and trusted. I want them to know I will always be there for them, for the good and the bad, without judgment.

Thank you, Mom, for being this and more.

Happy Mother’s Day!
