The destiny of man is in his own soul.

-Herodotus

There are some quotes that I just love and some that have helped shape my life. This is one of the latter.

Four years ago, I decided to leave my doctoral program to move across the country. It would bring us closer to family, which would be beneficial as we were expecting our first child, but meant I was leaving with my Master’s instead of a doctorate.

It wasn’t an easy decision, and sometimes I still think about it, wondering what my life would be like if we had stayed. But I’ve always believed things happen for a reason. I had to believe this move would be good for us, and, indeed, it has been amazing for my children to be near family.

There were two quotes that I clung to during this time. This is one of them. I had to hope that my destiny was somewhere inside me and I just had to find it. Sometimes I think I have, and sometimes I’m not too sure. But what I want out of life is becoming clearer as time goes on. This is one of the thoughts I dwell on whenever I get a chance to turn introspective. My destiny is somewhere inside me. I have what it takes to shape my future, whatever I choose it to be.
