-my dad

Over my entire life, my dad has given me asked for and unasked for nuggets of advice. Don’t all dads? But there’s one he repeated over and over, year after year. One that has stuck with me for over 20 years.

My dad came from a traditional Chinese family, but married a Chinese American (emphasis on the American) woman. Like any other child of Asian parents, I was pushed to consider a high paying career. Fortunately doctor and lawyer were never pushed on me, though I’m sure it would have made my dad happy.

But knowing I was my mom’s daughter, he knew I was going places, knew I wanted to do something with my life, but I was going to do it my way. So he gave me this piece of advice. To do what I love so it wouldn’t just be a job.

My dad has done a lot of things in his life, learned a lot. He chose to do things he loved and was interested in, and also did things he didn’t always enjoy. Likely influenced by my Americanized mother, he never told me I was going to become a doctor when I grew up. Instead he told me to do something I loved, something that would make me happy to do every day. That way it wouldn’t just be a job.

Thank you, Dad, for this one piece of advice I carry with me every day, the one thing I will always pass on to my children.
