What are you currently reading?

Tell No Lies by Allison Brennan is the second Quinn and Costa Thriller. I had the pleasure of reviewing the first book last year, so was interested in reading more about LAPD officer Kara Quinn and FBI agent Matt Costa. While I wasn’t exactly blown away by the first book, I was very curious about how Quinn and Costa would end up working together as they tended to mix more like oil and water, and now Costa is Quinn’s supervisor. So far, I feel a little out to sea with what’s going on, but I do like all the little threads running left and right. It’s definitely keeping me on my toes with how many different ways the investigation is going!

What did you recently finish reading?

I recently finished Requiem Moon by C. T. Rwizi. The second book in a South African-inspired fantasy, it’s a unique combination of magic and science fiction that involves a male mystic from a society where men aren’t allowed to be mystics getting himself and his friends involved with royal politics far from home. I adored the first book, Scarlet Odyssey, and couldn’t wait to return to the world, but I found it lacked the polish of the first book. Still, it was an easy read with plenty going on, and hints at still more intrigue and future clashes.

The Code by Peter McAllister was a fun sci-fi to follow Requiem Moon. It was quite fast-paced despite taking place over a 14 week period and involved a rather sophisticated AI going a bit haywire on the moon and it’s creators, Liam and Cletus, needing to figure out a way to shut it down all while someone’s after Liam for something completely unrelated. It was definitely more tell than show and there were many places where the story really could have dug deep, but it felt like it forewent the story in favor of all the science and tech pieces.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I may have accidentally taken on too many books that come out during the first week of April, so it’ll be…fun…to get them all read in time. Though I think I’ll be going with The Last Shadow Knight by Michael Webb as it comes out April 1st and looks like a rather fun and intense fantasy. It’s about a boy learning to become a Shadow Knight as an enemy is making it’s way over to take over the kingdom. After science fiction and a thriller, I’ll be quite happy to return to the land of fantasy.

After that, it’ll be another fantasy, due to be published April 2nd. DreamRovers: Price of Deliverance by Christie Valentine Powell is about people who are able to rove through dreams. I love when fantasy mixes with dreams, and just how trippy some of it turns out to be, so I’m hoping this really delivers on the fun and the fantasy.
