The Bookstore on the Beach by Brenda Novak. I’ll be honest, I only jumped on participating in the book blog tour for this one because it has a bookstore. And a beach. I’m experiencing a love-hate relationship with it at the moment, and I think how it ends will determine my ultimate feeling on it. It’s about 3 generations of women: the grandmother with a horrible past she refuses to tell her daughter about, the mother whose husband suddenly disappeared one day almost two years before, and the teenage granddaughter struggling with her father’s disappearance, her sexuality, and a deep dark secret.
What did you recently finish reading?
DreamRovers: Price of Deliverance by Christie Valentine Powell. While a little rough around the edges, I was quite pleasantly surprised by this one. With some of the main characters being a bit younger, I was afraid this would be more YA than I’d like, but it didn’t feel that way at all. Mostly about prejudice against a group of people with the ability to rove and tread through people’s dreams, it focused on the two sides of an argument: is it okay for people to wander through dreams? I loved reading both sides and was surprised by how sympathetic I was towards both. This also had just the right dash of romance, and such unique magic, that I can readily say I really enjoyed this one.
The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers. Oh my gosh, I loved this book! Of course, there were minor bits and pieces I wasn’t thrilled about, but, overall, this was an incredible story, and why have I not read more books about a circus before? Like my current read, it’s centered around generations of women in a family that should never have existed. There are so many family secrets, a daemon, and magic and it’s all wrapped up in Paris and the art world of the 1920s.
What do you think you’ll read next?
Malice by Heather Walter. Late last year I wished for this one on NetGalley on a whim. I hardly ever get the books I wish for, so was surprised for an approval. It’s a Sleeping Beauty retelling, and I do love fairy tale retellings. I’m just a little nervous because several reviews have indicated it’s YA-leaning, and I’m not a YA reader. Still, I’m hoping for an enjoyable read, and I’ve loved other books from Del Rey, so I’m optimistic.
The Light of the Midnight Stars by Rena Rossner. I didn’t read further than Jewish-inspired before I knew I wanted to read it. I’ve become really into (insert)-inspired fantasy lately and they’ve rarely let me down. It’s been so fun traveling the world and experiencing different cultures through books this past year. Anyways, I have a physical copy of it and, since I only get to read those during the day and need something different at night, I intend on reading this and Malice simultaneously.
