Friday Fun: Welcome to My Reading, Writing, ‘Rithmetic Blog!

I don’t know if I’ll keep doing these, but, for now, they’re kind of fun!

It was a fascinating morning when I realized I essentially have a reading, writing, and arithmetic blog. And of course an equally fascinating thought process landed me there.

Here’s how it went:

I have a jar of egg yolks I need to do something with. I think I have a recipe or notes or something to make creme patisserie in my binder. My binder really has my whole life in there, meaning my own personal life away from being a mom. I have my blogging schedule, my story notes and outlines, some mom related stuff (of course), and ratio baking notes and numbers.

Then I went to mop the floor because my daughter wants to throw around a ball of yarn and cleaning the floor was on my to do list today. Having to clean up the yarn to clean the floor just sounded too exhausting, so I took a break in thinking to clean the floor.

Thought breaks never seem to last long for me. Before long, I was back to thinking about my blog.

It went from thinking my blog used to be mom-related, but isn’t now, so I was thinking of writing a fun so many number of reasons why I don’t write a mom blog. My brain stalled at the point where I’m just one of the many moms stuttering along, trying to survive, so I have no cool or interesting or different ideas or tricks to keep kids entertained. That would be a very short-lived blog indeed. So I started thinking of what niches my blog might actually fall in.

Books, of course. Much of my content is book related. Then I have my writing. My brain likes to have fun with me and said something like:

reading. writing. ‘rthmetic! hahahaha.

But then the light bulb finally came on and I realized my blog really could be called a reading, writing, arithmetic blog.

Reading

From all the books. Definitely. I think of more book related posts to write than anything else. I also go overboard on the book commitments, so seem to always have at least 2 book reviews to share a week. I haven’t had a reading slump since more than half of 2018, so…knock on wood!

Writing

I’ve been a writer since I was 8, so it’s part of my life and I can’t stop. Even if I wanted to. I’m sharing my Cinderella/The Little Mermaid/Rapunzel inspired story Sisters of String and Glass five days a week now, and hope to add some writing thoughts and notes on another work in progress I currently call This Story. It won’t ever make a real appearance here as I hope to try to get it published by a publishing house, but I’ll definitely be writing about it one day.

Arithmetic

I abhor math. Like I groan and complain now that I’ve taken over doing my family’s finances because I hate math so much. It seems funny that I would add math to my life. But…it’s there. I do ratio baking because I’m tired of following recipes and, honestly, I get much better results from using ratios and weights. I don’t post about baking as often as I used to since my family seems to only want bread, butter cookies, and chocolate cake (but I really do need to do something about those egg yolks!), but those posts definitely contain more math than I would want it to. Does reading it make anyone else woozy? I’ve even seen a couple of my baking posts mentioned on a math blog!

And there you have it

My blog focuses on reading, writing, and arithmetic without ever meaning to. Still no clue what my real niche is, but I kind of like it that way. It keeps things fun and flexible and I can’t say I ever really get bored of what I do here.

And those egg yolks? Chocolate pudding! My 4 year old helped put in the chocolate chips and, well, I’m sure you can guess how sweet it ended up!
