First, Middle, and Last Impressions – September 1, 2021

I love taking a look at a book cover and description and then coming up with my own idea of what the book will be about. Sometimes I’m right, sometimes I’m so wrong it’s almost funny. So I’ve decided to launch myself off of WWW Wednesday, a bookish meme run by Sam@Taking on a World of Words, and write about my first, middle, and last impressions of each book I read.

The first impression is based solely on the cover and description. What do I think it will be about?

The middle impression is kind of a check-in on how the story is going about halfway through.

The last impression is my final thoughts on the book, what I’m left thinking.

Verena’s Whistle by K. Panikian – Urban Fantasy

First Impression: Based on the description since the cover comes off as more of less just purple, my impression is that this is a magical journey across the world where the characters must now reveal long-held secrets.

Middle Impression: Halfway through and my impression is now that it’s a monster hunt set primarily in Russia, and I’m surprised by how much I’m enjoying this.

Last Impression: This is a fast-paced monster hunt involving another world linked to ours with interesting magic and fun characters.

Tok: Magick Tale by Pablo Reig Mendoza – Fantasy

First Impression: My impression is that this is an esoteric-style historical fantasy involving bringing magic back. I’m really curious about this because it’s one of the very few translated books I’ve ever read.

Middle Impression: It feels like a classic mixed with fantasy, but written in modern times. I don’t know if that makes any sense, but, overall, it mostly feels like a strange gold hunt under the guise of war without the war actually being really present.

Last Impression: A fascinating fantasy blending philosophy, history, fantasy, and religion to create something of an alternate time line/history that’s short, but involves a great deal of brain power. Oh, and there are definitely dragons!

The Goodbye Song by Karl Kristian Flores – Fiction

First Impression: I really have no real impression of this. I expect it’ll be a blend of many things just as the author promised: 10 poems, 10 recipes, 10 letters, etc. Mostly, I’m hoping for something insightful or offering food for thought.

Middle Impression: My impression is that it’s interesting, but not necessarily for me. It’s sometimes sweet, sometimes just very real. It feels like I’m getting glimpses of real life.

Last Impression: My final impression is that this is both naive and jaded. It’s a collection of so many different formats, but just really made me feel like I was getting to know different individuals.

100% Organic by James Allinson – Fantasy, Satire

First Impression: Just like the first book, my impression is that this will be fun and full of humor and will feature a rivalry.

Middle Impression: Fun with shenanigans that turn out to be quite interesting!

Last Impression: My impression is that this is definitely fun, but there might have been too many elements thrown into this one. It wasn’t quite as humorous and Julian wasn’t quite as morally disgusting as I had hoped, but it’s still fun and quick.

The High Mage by John-Ross Elliot – Fantasy

First Impression: I have no idea. The cover doesn’t reveal much and the description is a little lean, but I think I’m supposed to anticipate a mystery?

Middle Impression: The writing is all over the place and kind of hard to follow, but I love the magic.

Last Impression: My last impression is that there’s a lot of good working material, but it’s so hard to really follow everything due to poor writing. The magic, what I could understand of it, was really interesting, though.

The Tenant’s Wrath by Gabriel Nombo – Science Fiction

First Impression: My impression is that this will be a lot of fun and is centered around a research report of how aliens live together as landlord and tenant.

Middle Impression: I’m sorry to say I’m a little bored. It’s a lot of conversations between people, but not as much wrath as I expected. I also have a hard time envisioning this as high tech as it should be. I tend to think it’s something of an alternate history of part of Africa.

Last Impression: I’m feeling a little confused. I don’t think I understood the humor in this one and I don’t think I got enough wrath. Instead, it felt more like I was in a city somewhere in Africa, but the author did his best to shape it into a city on another planet.

First Impression: A book full of magic and finding one’s place.

The Bone Ship’s Wake by RJ Barker – Fantasy

First Impression: First of all, I’m so sad this trilogy is ending! Book 2 left me utterly speechless and I’ve been anticipated this one for too long, but now I’m so conflicted about finishing the series. I just know it’s going to be an incredible conclusion.
