Genre: Fantasy
From the USA Today bestselling author of the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles comes an extraordinary new series filled with elemental magic, mythic creatures, and heroic gargoyles.
This is Kylie’s big break. Thanks to an enchanted tree, the journalist and her gargoyle companion, Quinn, have a secret lead on the story of a lifetime—if they’re brave enough to follow it.
However, she’s not the only one chasing this story. If anyone is going to write a high-profile article, Kylie’s rival, Nathan, believes it should be him. And he’s willing to play dirty to get his way.
To beat Nathan, Kylie and Quinn must work fast. Yet with every new lead forcing them deeper into a deadly maze of murder, warped magic, and monstrous beasts, rushing could prove fatal.
Kylie is determined to publish her dream story, but is it worth dying for?
Why This Book
Leads & Lynxes is the first is a really fun trilogy full of mysteries, romance, magic, and even an adorable creature companion. It’s all about junior journalist Kylie seeking the story of a lifetime. I loved Kylie. She’s spunky and smart and one of the bravest fictional women I know. She makes me think of Nancy Drew, if Nancy lived in a world of magic. Kylie jumps into mysteries and cases with both feet and never a look back. I loved her devotion to pursuing a story, even if it meant certain danger. Oh, and, in the prequel, she ended up making a deal with a harpy, who ends up out for her life over the course of the trilogy. So of course Kylie must be on my list of courageous women. I could never do even a little bit of what she did throughout this book and the rest of the series.
Reviews
My review: “Kylie is spunky and dogged when she catches the scent of a story. She actually reminded me of a somewhat more cautious Nancy Drew. Willing to do everything necessary to track down the story of a lifetime, she actually really is focused on doing something good for society. She’s also not afraid to wander into danger, though she doesn’t always know she is. Still, she remains poised and ready to help however she can. I really liked her and admired her bravery”
Musings of a Bookish Kitty said “Yes, she’s ambitious, and combine that with her desire to do good and expose the bad, she really wants to make a difference. Kylie is tenacious and smart. She also has good instincts, and does well under pressure in tight situations.”
ev0ke said “A daughter of privilege, she is determined to make her own way in the world. Journalism is not a hobby for her; it’s her life. Deeply ethical, she is also courageous; despite her fears — of failure, of Zipporah, of dying in the ruins — she keeps moving forward, keeps fighting”
