Title: The Bitter and Sweet of Cherry Season

Author: Molly Fader

Publisher: Graydon House

Publication Date: June 9, 2020

Genre: Women’s Fiction

In cherry season, anything is possible…

Everything Hope knows about the Orchard House is from the stories of her late mother. So when she arrives at the northern Michigan family estate late one night with a terrible secret and her ten-year-old daughter in tow, she’s not sure if she’ll be welcomed or turned away with a shotgun by the aunt she has never met.

Hope’s aunt, Peg, has lived in the Orchard House all her life, though the property has seen better days. She agrees to take Hope in if, in exchange, Hope helps with the cherry harvest—not exactly Hope’s specialty, but she’s out of options. As Hope works the orchard alongside her aunt, daughter and a kind man she finds increasingly difficult to ignore, a new life begins to blossom. But the mistakes of the past are never far behind, and soon the women will find themselves fighting harder than ever for their family roots and for each other.

Why This Book

The Bitter and Sweet of Cherry Season gives us our first orchard of the month. Much of this book is actually set at a cherry orchard. Hope and her daughter have arrived at her aunt’s house, running from an abusive ex. But family is a little thorny and it’ll take this aunt and niece, and great-niece, some time to adjust and grow to become a family. This is a beautiful story of family, secrets, and growing to be a unit, with some sweet romances and friendships thrown in. But I love the cherry orchard the most. The characters are given the opportunity to pick cherries to sell them, and I loved learning about that process. I also love this one because cherries are my favorite fruit.

Reviews

My review: “I loved the orchard and The Orchard House. Of course, that might be because I just love cherries and wouldn’t mind living there myself, but I felt like I could feel the cherries, taste them. I felt like I was actually in the orchard. I loved it, and thought the house and the garden beside it was charming”

Tropical Girl Reads gave this 5 stars, saying “This book was emotional and I was so hooked into the story. The story is told from the perspectives of Peg, Hope and Tink and it’s good to know what the three women think of each other. It was unputdownable as well and the writing was really good and engaging that the author did a good job making the reader hooked into the story. The ending of the book was intense that kept me at the edge of my sea”

A Good Life loved this book, saying “Strong female characters, deep character development and a setting that will make you swoon.  Add family secrets, the dissonance between two characters, a wonderful opportunity to practice your predicting skills, characters to love, and ones that irked you and you have a novel for everyon”
