The quotes I am providing today capture how I feel each and every day about my surroundings and the many, many things I don’t know….but thirst to understand. And how there are many things, at least in the present with the current technology, that are out of the scope of science through hypothesis testing.

During the middle part of my high school education, I became enamored with mathematics. I enjoyed chemistry, but even in chemistry there was math! I became fascinated by my observation that many things in every day life could be modeled by math. For instance, city planning and building is almost all based on mathematics. Structures and their components must be made to certain specifications to ensure equal distribution either for people or complexes. The dimensions of a box could be modeled with calculus based math to ensure profitability. Or even more complex figuring out the amount of chemical fuel needed to break away from the Earth’s gravity! Through my early biology classes I saw that even biochemical processes progressed towards equilibrium and could be modeled with math. Even now, there continues to be so much that I don’t know. But I remain steadfast in reading and experiencing new things to learn about cultures, food, and specially science.
At the time, high school, I did not know where math came from! I was doing algebra in my sophomore year, but I did not know the origins. So I began to read about the History of Mathematics. So I walked to my local public library after working (I was a cashier at a local supermarket) to learn about what I didn’t know – taking out a book on the subject. The book was titled The History of Mathematics by Boyer and Merzbach.
The journey enveloped me into Ancient Egypt around 3000 B.C. with development of simple arithmetic (addition; multiplication; division; and some limited algebra) and the base 10 positional number system. Then the Babylonians developed slightly more complex math by developing the first equations solving for unknowns, including dreaded quadratic equations – but without a quadratic formula. Additionally, they developed square roots! Then in Ancient Greece, the advent of papyrus, contributed to the development of the Pythagorean theorem, Euclidian and plane geometry, and trigonometry. I mean the list goes on and on. In the 1600s, with the development of calculus, new method of modeling developed! One could then look at moving objects and generate a function (formula) that modeled that process. This inevitably led Newton to the development of the formula for gravitation – leading to a profound change in the way we saw our solar system and the universe. A lot more has taken place since those times.
My message here is to stay curious! Every day I feel like a kid. There are major problems, real life problems that necessitate perseverance. For me, Newton’s quotes provide inspiration to stay curious and humble – as not everything can be explained by science…at least not yet. Feelings, sensations, consciousness have some biological explanation (brain and neurotransmission for stimulus to response!) can partially be explained but remain to fully modeled outside of a human being. But AI (artificial intelligence) is in the works….and we are getting closer.

Whether it is about mastering blogging as a art form; the challenges faced as a parent of a newborn or toddler; or someone who is a parent of 3 and happens to blog about comics and star wars!
