Overtired Baby is a Sleeping Baby?!

Oh, my precious little 8 month old daughter, I wish I could figure you out. When you wake up during the 11pm hour, I know it’s going to be a long and wakeful night. When you wake during the midnight hour, I know we will both sleep for two hours at a time. When you wake during the 1am hour, I know it’s going to be a great night. Such has been true since you were 6 months.

How can I get you to sleep, at least until that 1am hour?

The experts say an overtired baby does not sleep well, so make sure baby sleeps. I did that. I made sure you got your naps. When you yawned and rubbed your eyes, I shushed your brother and got you to sleep.

And you woke up during that dreaded 11pm hour.

What am I doing wrong?! Experts, help!

After another Saturday spent with your grandparents, during which you refused to nap for 6 straight hours, at least, I dreaded nighttime. But you slept until that 1am hour!

What? How? Huh?

Then I remembered every Saturday spent with your grandparents and Thanksgiving when you were up almost all day. You slept each of those nights. That’s when I realized too much sleep was bad for you. You needed to be overtired to sleep at night. 14 hours of sleep a day for a baby your age? Pssh! Your brother was always at the lower end of the sleep scale, and you are even lower. 14 hours is too much for you.

You, my darling, thrive on no more than 12 hours. And that’s okay. You get enough sleep for you. You are happy and health, so it doesn’t really matter if you don’t sleep during the day. More time for you to spend with mommy and brother.

    1. So glad to know my daughter isn’t alone! They certainly do want to soak up as much life as possible at such a young age. Hopefully that never changes.
