Return of the 80s Dude!

So, August was not a particularly easy month. Our family experienced some tragedies. The eldest member of the family, our Grandmother, passed away. And, as fate would have it, a few days later, our Uncle passed as well. We spent the month basically commuting from home, to work, to the hospital, or from home to the hospital, or from home to various locations to celebrate the lives of those we lost. Honestly, these types of things. All this happening with children can be challenging and equally fulfilling. I have learned that our son has incredible empathy and has begun to understand. Our youngest has also blossomed into her own. As a Dad, I am very proud. My wife, who has endured much during this time, in addition to her usually heavy load, has managed to keep things together. These types of events really put life into perspective. We are but a small spec on a blue marble near a yellow star. We are situated in just the right location that it’s not too hot or too cold. There is so much out there, in the vastness of space-time. And we are here but only a short moment. Life is a gift…and it only lasts for short time in the grand scheme of things. Life is a mystery and full of unknowns. All the world is a stage….ready for the next act? Love is wonderful. Like life, it is full of wonder, joy, and pleasure. And simultaneously it is full death, sadness, and pain. With that, we hopefully leave August – and its trail of death – behind.

With that, what better way to try and reconnect than to reflect on something that always brings joy and happiness: THE 80’S! Pretty much all things now relate to my wife.

Let’s  begin with one of my all-time favorites: “Better Off Dead!” Seriously, I want my two dollars! And Lane is probably one of those characters I related to the most. Cusak does a great job of showing just how awkward it could be to be a teen. But let’s be honest, it’s a classic!

But very little can be said without the next one: “Monty Python and the Holy Grail!” I mean, it’s only a flesh wound! Love the horses. C’mon, if this doesn’t make you laugh, I can’t help you! I shall just say “nee!” But you have to do it properly! But I digress because in order to pass that bridge these three question ye must answer!

This one is a killer – chopper: “Airwolf!” I wanted to like String Fellow Hawk. But that machine is still cool! A silent all-purpose war machine!

And you can’t talk Airwolf without matching it up with “Knight Rider!” I always wondered where that truck was and how it was refueled? And did kit prefer one type of gasoline over another? I mean seriously, a talking car! Need I say more?

And now I just have to…just have to go there: “He-Man!” The most powerful man in the universe! I mean he could move a planet! And he had Skeletor to match!

And what about “Thundercats!” They are on the move! They are on the loose! And Mumbra!!

And you can’t talk 80’s without the one and only: “Michael Jackson!” Billie Jean and Beat it! I mean it! Seriously!

Hmmm. Where do I go from here? I think a peek at my frustrating cartridges and constant blowing into them and placing it just so to get it to work: “NES!” For me, it was all about Mario 1 and Zelda! Hands down Zelda is still my all-time favorite.

And I really liked “Perfect Strangers” because let’s face it, I was strange! Loved this show! I want to go to Mypos!

And who can mention the 80’s without: “Back to the Future!” I’m still waiting for my hoverboard.

And then: “Star Trek: TNG!” I’m immortal again! Riker my good fortune is your good fortune! Seriously we need more leaders like Picard!

Picard meets Kirk! Need I say more!

There is so much more I could do here! But it’s just a return.

Thank you for reading! Until next time. Same bat time same bat channel! Live long and prosper.

    1. Geek Mamas,
Thank you so much for your comment! I’m so happy that you were able to pull out a moment of joy from our post. Those times were so different from now. But everything evolves. I appreciate your input on “Better Off Dead.” I was actually watching it (listening to it) as I wrote the post. There are so many good lines in this movie!
Lane: “She only speaks French, Roy. She doesn’t speak imbecile”

Lane: “Two brothers… One speaks no English, the other learned English from watching “The Wide World of Sports.” So you tell me… Which is better, speaking no English at all, or speaking Howard Cosell? ”

Lane: “Monique, I just wanted to thank you… for everything. Merci buckets.”

      This movie is a classic!

  1. So sorry to read about your family loses this August, so sad. My husband loves Monty Python and the holy grail, he laughs so hard. I used to watch knight rider with my dad, and who doesn’t love Michael Jackson…what a talent. He was amazing. I still remember watching Thriller over and over with my friends. We have Back to the Future on VHS up north at Our Little Red House. We don’t have cable, phone, or internet up there so we watch old shows on an old TV my dad gave the kids. It is like going back to the 80’s. Great post, thanks for taking me back to those crazy 80’s.

    1. Ourlittleredhouseblog,

Thank you for your thoughts. We are appreciative. I think we’re calling August the month of death! Very similar to “Oh no! It’s the burning rain of death!” from Hocus Poscus! Also a classic which we watch every Halloween. It really makes us happy to know that joy was brought out through this post. Your situation is awesome! Those old tv shows had lessons! And they also required an attention span. I think that the times have changed and scenes appear quick and disconnected – perhaps a reflection on our “new social norms?” But I digress. What about Ghostbusters? I and II? And for that matter Indiana Jones – seriously though…just the first three. ” You are strangely dressed, for a Knight? There are so many? …You must choose, but choose wise? …You have chosen…wisely.” OK…one more…one of my favorites!

Dark Helmet: “Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Starr.”
      Lone Starr: “What?”
      Dark Helmet: “I am your father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate.”
Lone Starr: “What’s that make us?”
Dark Helmet: “Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become!”

Dark Helmet: “Careful you idiot! I said across her nose, not up it!”

Please forgive the expletives. I will try to censor as much as possible.

[Princess Vespa has been given a gun]
Princess Vespa: “I ain’t shooting this thing, I hate guns.”

[then her hair gets hit by a laser]
Princess Vespa: “My hair, he shot my hair! Son of a b–ch!”

      So many great lines here!
I think this post merits a more in depth post! So I will follow up on it! Thank you for reading and thank you for your time and comments!
