• The Lily Cafe Digest #12: a look at the posts I've published in the past 6 weeks and posts from other bloggers that I've enjoyed

    The Lily Cafe Digest #12

Wow, the summer really flew by, didn’t it? In my last Digest, I mentioned my son had graduated from Kindergarten in June. Now he’s started First Grade. From home, because our school district is smart and decided for an online only start. But it leaves me with less time for my blog since school runs from 9-2:15 and I still have a toddler to take care of. And potty train. Yay. I often wonder these days how students will come out of this, especially as they get older. I wonder at how independent and resilient they might be, how creative and confident in their own abilities. With students on their…

  • Why I Share My Fiction - why I post my writings to my blog for everyone to read

    Why I Share My Fiction

Once upon a time, The Lily Cafe was a writing blog in 2013-2015. I shared my fiction and some poetry. Most of it’s still there if you’re curious; they’re too much a part of what this blog is for me to want to delete it. When I came back to blogging in 2018, I hoped to find the same writing community I had left. I was a little disappointed. Back then, I had found several writers doing as I was doing and posting their fiction. I “met” Jennifer M. Zeiger at that time, as well as some other writers who no longer blog here, or, at least, not under the…

  • The Lily Cafe Digest #11 - catch up on my posts from the past 4 weeks and enjoy some from bloggers I follow

    The Lily Cafe Digest #11

Is it already time for another Digest? Yes, it is! This was a short 4 week round, but July has some big dates for my family, so I’ll be taking the next 2 weeks off. The past four weeks just flew past. My son virtually graduated from Kindergarten, which was different, but still really nice. The teachers had each student record their favorite memory from Kindergarten and it turned out most of my son’s class, including him, really loved math. Mostly, though, I’m astounded by just how quickly he picked up reading. A year ago we were struggling with letter sounds. Now he randomly reads words all over the place.…

  • The Lily Cafe Digest #10 - catch up on blog posts from the past 6 weeks and enjoy some posts from bloggers I follow

    The Lily Cafe Digest #10

Wow, an entire cycle of 6 weeks of posting done completely during the quarantine/isolation/stay at home thing because of COVID-19. It’s been…something. Fun some days, not so fun other days. It all depends on whether or not the Kindergartener wants to do school from home that day and whether the toddler has sufficient activities to get her through a morning where I have to teach her older brother. But I haven’t completely lost my mind. Yet. I mean, California isn’t as bad as it could be thanks to our governor and the mayor of LA county. We shut down quickly and now our county is slowly reopening. The school year,…

  • The Lily Cafe Digest #9 - a summary of what I've posted between February 24, 2020 and April 3, 2020 as well as some favorite bloggers and blog posts

    The Lily Cafe Digest #9

Well, the past six weeks have been interesting. Let’s see. As soon as I came back from my week-long blogging break at the end of February, my daughter and I were involved in an unexpected, unfortunate incident that completely knocked me down for about a week or so. And then the coronavirus spread to the States and now has us all in a stranglehold. My state is under a Safer at Home order, so, other than about 3 walks, I’ve been inside for the past 3 weeks. So, yeah, fun six weeks. My best friend moved to China several years ago, so I had a bad feeling the coronavirus would…

  • The Lily Cafe Digest #8 - take a look at what I've posted and posts from other bloggers that I've enjoyed

    The Lily Cafe Digest #8

Well, that was fast. My first blogging break of the year is here. I contemplated whether I should continue to take breaks every 6 or so weeks and decided that, yes, I should. Not only do they give me a bit of breathing space, but it gives me time to really turn my focus back to my family. Also, as an introvert, interacting with people, even if it’s over the Internet, is exhausting and I really need to recharge. The most important thing I learned I needed to do was to just take some time to pause, to stop, to come to a standstill so I can look back and…

    The Lily Cafe Digest #7

It’s that time again! Time for a break. Since my son will be off from school for the next 3 weeks, I’ll be taking the time off as well. Once again, this Digest comes at the start of my break, so I hope you understand why I’m not allowing comments. I don’t plan to be anywhere near WordPress for the next 2 weeks, though I’ll be around to write my upcoming posts during the third week, so I may stop in and say hi. My last break came after 9 weeks of blogging, so I was a little caught off guard when the past 3 weeks just sped by. In…

  • The Bloggers I Love: Moms Edition - some of my favorite mom bloggers

The Bloggers I Love: Moms Edition

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been sharing some of the bloggers I adore. First I talked about the absolutely beautiful and authentic souls I’ve had the great honor to “meet” here. Then I shared some writers/authors and book reviewers I enjoy every chance I get. Now it’s time for me to share some of the mothers I enjoy reading. Unfortunately, this was a bit harder to do as mom bloggers have a tendency to vanish from the blogging world, so, even though I enjoy a number that have come and gone and come and gone again, I’ll just be sharing the ones who post more often. I Didn’t Want…

The Bloggers I Love: Beautiful, Authentic Souls Edition

While compiling the stories, writing related posts, and book reviews I had enjoyed each week, I noticed that, as much as I tried to share a post from different bloggers each week, there were still some that made the list almost every week, so I’d like to share why I adore them. There are also other bloggers I read religiously. They don’t necessarily write stories or focus on talking about writing, but they still have their own stories to tell. So, please, I hope you take a look at some of the bloggers I love. This week, I would like to invite you to check out some of the most…

  • The Lily Cafe Digest #6 - catch up on what I've posted!

    The Lily Cafe Digest #6

This Digest comes during my week-long blogging break, so I hope you understand why I’m not allowing comments. As it’s also Thanksgiving week in the US, I’ll be spending my time with my family and away from this blog and email as much as possible. The past 9 weeks have been full of changes and reflection. I posted 17 book reviews and was delighted to host my first author, Jeremy P. Boggess, and his nonfiction book Taking Action for a Better Tomorrow. I’ve also been baking up a storm. In addition to writing down 5 ratio recipes, I baked muffins, quick bread, and custard using their respective ratios and learned how to…
