• Growing up, I loved reading Nancy Drew and wanted to be just like her. As an adult, I don't, but I still believe she has a message for all of us.

Nancy Drew Was My Role Model

I started reading the Nancy Drew mysteries when I was about 9. I vividly remember  spending a summer sitting around all day with my nose in a Nancy Drew book. I loved them so much, my mom signed me up to receive 3 by mail every month. It didn’t take me long to finish them, and it wasn’t long before I was begging her to take me to the bookstore so I could get more. It’s really my mom’s fault. She had read a few of the yellow cover books and her parents had kept them. One afternoon, she was helping her parents clear out an old garage and found…

Do be sure to check out his blog and take a look at his very interesting book reviews (and maybe add a book or two to your list)! • 3 Quotes, 3 Days Challenge – Day 3 (3rd time)

Thank you so much to Stephen T of Armageddon Cafe for the nomination! Be sure to check out his fantastic blog and give him a follow! Ah, the cares of tomorrow can wait ’til this day is done. -Come by the Hills by W. Gordon Smith I sang mostly children’s rhymes to my son at bedtime, but I love Celtic music, so chose to sing Celtic songs to my daughter. Come by the Hills is one of them. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to mean, but I like to think it means to deal with the current day and worry about tomorrow tomorrow. Singing this to my daughter is…

  • A Starry Night

When I was nine, I wrote my first poem. It was for my dad for Father’s Day because, being nine, I didn’t actually have any money to buy him anything. But I wanted to give him something special. So, I ventured into the realm of poetry writing, not really knowing what it was. I wrote it out on a piece of white paper and created a paper frame decorated with stars of all sizes. I don’t remember much after that, but I know my dad displayed it for a while. In honor of Father’s Day, here is that poem. And a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.…

  • Recipe Review: Chocolate and Hazelnut Mug Cake from Mother of Girls

Last week I tried the Birthday Cake Surprise mug cake from Mother of Girls, because I thought my son would try it so I let him pick which one I made. Turns out I was wrong; he did not want to try it. It was delicious, but I’m a chocoholic, so I wished I had made the Chocolate and Hazelnut mug cake instead. So I did. And it was as good as I expected based on how good the birthday cake one was! My son wasn’t as interested in helping me this time, so I held my daughter and she got to watch me add all the ingredients and give…

  • What If My Daughter Had Been Born on Star Wars Day?

My daughter was due at the end of May. But I had serious doubts as to whether we would actually make it to May. Her brother was born nowhere near his due date and even though my doctor did what she could to try to keep the baby in until term, I’m mostly sure I started dilating in mid-April. As April came to a close, I began to fret. May 4th was coming up fast. How long could I stay dilated at 3cm before giving birth? Scouring the Internet didn’t give me any real answer. Would it be so terrible if she had been born on Star Wars Day? Probably…

  • Gates to Asphodel, Chapter 1

Darkness was rapidly falling. House and porch lights flickered on, casting shadows left and right. Light posts came to life all along the quiet, tree lined street, illuminating all that lay beneath them. The light pooling in the street streamed through the windows of a little girl’s room, where the girl sat on the floor, back to the windows, playing with a handful of stuffed animals. Four-year-old Corey Fallon sat in the dark, her auburn curls falling just past her shoulders, shining in the faint light coming through her windows. Her small, pale hands toyed with the arms of a large stuffed bear while a white rabbit rested in her…
