To forget again

A poem inspired by The Death of Ivan Illyich:

I’ve forgotten the last we saw each other
The last our fingers touched
The last I saw your smile
I’ve forgotten what it is like
To be with you, by your side
Then I know, I recall, I see
So clearly, vividly
I see us standing there, smiling
Staring at each other, in perfect harmony
I can feel your touch, the warmth of your smile
And then I see you walking away
Anger on your gentle face
Fading away from me
The distance great
And then –
I forget
